WHAT IS PLA PLASTIC PACKAGING?
PLA plastic is a plant-derived bioplastic used in food service items. As the industry moves toward sustainable materials, brands want a compostable option without sacrificing familiar formats or performance. We use PLA across items such as compostable coffee cup lids and compostable cutlery, including spoons, forks, and teaspoons.
PLA PLASTIC PACKAGING RECYCLABILITY
PLA is not usually accepted in standard plastic recycling streams because it's chemically different from common plastics. In South Africa, it is not currently recycled, so it should not be placed in standard plastic recycling unless a recycler explicitly requests it.
PLA PLASTIC PACKAGING ECO-FRIENDLINESS
However, from an eco-friendliness perspective, PLA is industrially compostable and bio-based. This means that, recycled correctly, it can be converted back into organic compost. The climate impact is also lower than that of fossil-based polymer packaging.
Where industrial composting collection is available, PLA lids and cutlery make the most sense as part of that closed-loop composting setup.
OUR COMMITMENT TO LOOP CERTIFIED PRODUCTS
At Viro, we have created product standards and certifications to mandate local production, circular design for recyclability, and minimum levels of post-consumer recycled content. Our Loop Certified initiative underscores our dedication to sustainability and circularity in packaging solutions.
