WHAT IS HIPS PLASTIC PACKAGING
HIPS plastic, or high-impact polystyrene, is a rigid, lightweight PS material. In food service, it's commonly used where your business requires a reliable seal and consistent fit, such as for takeaway hot drinks.
At Viro Solutions, PS is used in our high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) coffee cup lids to ensure a tight seal for fast-moving café customers. Our items include 250ml, 350ml, and 500ml coffee cup lids.
HIPS PLASTIC PACKAGING RECYCLABILITY
HIPS is part of the polystyrene family and is identified under code 6. Recycling is determined by local acceptance and the condition of the item at disposal. It should be clean, dry, and free of food contamination before entering the recycling stream. Polystyrene items, such as HIPS lids, can be placed in the plastics recycling stream after rinsing.
HIPS PLASTIC PACKAGING ECO-FRIENDLINESS
Like other conventional plastics, HIPS does not degrade easily, so if it's littered or mismanaged, it can persist in the environment and gradually break into smaller fragments over time. The impact isn't just the item itself; it's also the long-term pollution risk when waste systems fail.
Still, that persistence is a property of most durable food packaging materials, not unique to HIPS, and the real environmental outcome depends far more on collection, containment, and disposal systems than on the polymer alone.
OUR COMMITMENT TO LOOP CERTIFIED PRODUCTS
At Viro, we have created product standards and certifications to mandate local production, circular design for recyclability, and minimum levels of post-consumer recycled content. Our Loop Certified initiative underscores our dedication to sustainability and circularity in packaging solutions.
